On May 26, invited by the vice dean of School of Humanities and Law, the world famous linguist and professor of University of Antwerp, Jef. Verschueren, who put forward the Theory of Linguistic Adaptability and found the International Pragmatics Association, visited Panjin campus and gave an introductory lesson to the students majored in Business English. The topic of the lesson was “Explicit and Implicit meaning in a Theory of Pragmatics”.
【Introduction】
Pro.Jef. Verschueren studied Germanic language and literature at Universiteit Antwerpen in Belgium from 1970 to 1974. And he got the degree of master and the degree of doctor at University of California, Berkeley in United States. His tutor is the world’s famous language philosopher, Pro. J. Searle.
Pro.Jef. Verschueren has been teaching at Universiteit Antwerpen from 1981. From 2001 to 2003, he served as the dean of College of Humanities. From 2003 to 2009, he served as the leader of the College of Arts. He taught courses of “An introduction to semantics and pragmatics” , “Lexical semantics”, “The indo-european language structure research”, “Cross-cultural pragmatics and international communication”, “Public language application in the field of pragmatics”, “The basic theory of pragmatics”,etc. Since 1983, he served as the editor-in-chief of the journal called Pragmatics with the world’s famous linguists Herman Parret, Jacob May, Andreas Jucker, Anita Fetzer. Now, he serves as the secretary-general of International pragmatics research board. He has trained 40 doctoral students and 20 students as tutor.
